Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN, CAS 78-67-1) is an organic compound presented as a white powder. It dissolves in alcohols and most common organic solvents but is insoluble in water, with a higher density than water. Moderately toxic by ingestion, AIBN is highly flammable, easily ignited by sparks or open flames and burns fiercely, releasing toxic nitrogen oxides during combustion. It serves as a common radical initiator for vinyl polymerization and a blowing agent for plastics and rubber, widely used in catalysis and polymer material manufacturing.
