Cupric nitrate is a copper nitrate salt with broad uses. It is mainly converted into copper oxide, which acts as a strong catalyst in organic chemistry. It is also applied in textile processing and metal polishing, and used for voltaic cell experiment teaching. In organic synthesis, cupric nitrate reacts with acetic anhydride and serves as an efficient reagent for aromatic nitration. Its hydrate can catalyze the oxidative coupling of 2,6-dimethylphenol to make engineering polymers; its trihydrate catalyzes the solvent-free synthesis of 3-aminopropenones and 3-aminopropenoates, and its pentahydrate is used to prepare new coordination polymers. Besides, cupric nitrate is also used in medicine, insecticides, chemical analysis and photosensitive paper production, showing great industrial versatility.
