Product Description of Ethylene Glycol (CAS 107-21-1)

Ethylene glycol is primarily used in the production of antifreeze for automotive cooling systems and as a key raw material for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in polyester fibers and plastics. It is also employed in the manufacture of synthetic resins, solvents, lubricants, surfactants, softeners, wetting agents, explosives, and other industrial products.

Ethylene glycol can often serve as a substitute for glycerol, functioning as a hydrating agent in leather processing and as a solvent in pharmaceutical applications. The compound exhibits strong solubility; however, it is easily metabolized and oxidized to form toxic oxalic acid, limiting its use as a general solvent.
